We usually see altruism, concern for others before oneself, as being the opposite of selfishness, concern for oneself before others. Buddhism does not see it as either one or the other but rather as a blending of the two. Genuine self-concern will gradually mature into concern for others as one sees that others are really the same as oneself. This is genuine compassion and it is the most beautiful jewel in the crown of the Buddha's teaching.

Thank you +Chadamas Plainkim I missed you already. Yes, for the words I have to read three times to understand the meaning. You are the first person on my list to visit tomorrow.

The only true universal-compassion practice of Buddhism, in my opinion, is Mahayana Buddhism. Hinayana Buddhism is focused just on oneself and one is only concerned with ones own liberation and nirvana. Mahayana Buddhism as advocated by the Dalai Lama really is the only true path to embracing compassion universally. When you meet the monks of Vietnamese and Thai Buddhism, they are certainly nice, and blessed by the Buddha. However, the monks of Tibetan Buddhists have a special blessing, from both Buddha and Padmasambhava, and are collectively spreading compassion universally.

Thank you so much +Keith Charles for the wonderful comment. I agree with you, to a certain degree, but not completely. I, myself, practice Hinayana or Theravada Buddhism my whole life, I pay very close attention to the Buddhist cannon, and it's not like what you wrote one hundred percent. We cannot compare the two by looking at the individual. We must look deep into the Buddhist teaching. There are several famous Theravada Buddhist monks I know who have universal compassion for all beings, who follow the true teaching of Lord Buddha, not quite like what you wrote here. We must look at a bigger picture for comparison, to avoid false information.
Thank you so much for your kind visit +Keith Charles
Wishing you a wonderful day.
